Emley have had many tough battles against teams from the North-east over the years and the two matches in the Trophy first qualifying round in 1977 were no exception.
The previous Saturday Emley had travelled to Tyneside to meet North Shields and led 1-0 from a first-half Pamment goal scored after 32 minutes. North Shields came back at Emley and six minutes later Ray Dennis collected a through ball but the Shields forward followed through on the Emley ‘keeper. Dennis retaliated with his knee and the referee promptly sent him off. Mick Pamment took over in goal and the defence covered Pamment so well that he had few anxious moments until Carr nipped in mid-way through the second half to get an equalizer and bring the game to replay on the following Tuesday evening.
The replay also saw a sending off, this time for North Shields who lost Storey after a nasty foul on Pamment early in the second-half. By then though Emley were 3 up. North Shields had to field a deputy ‘keeper to replace Rowel who was injured in the first game. His replacement, Wake, had a torrid time against Brookes, Pamment and Cook in the Emley attack.
The first two goals came from set-pieces, which the deputising ‘keeper failed to handle. Firstly, Fielding curled in a corner which Wake couldn’t reach and with Cook harassing the defenders one of them deflected it into the goal. The second was from a S.B. Greaves free-kick. This time Wake tried to punch it clear but made a mess of it and the ball bounced towards goal. Again Cook went for it but was beaten by defender Chapman who looked on in dismay as the ball cannoned in off his legs.
Just before half-time Emley made it 3 when Greaves sent the ball over and a brilliant Brookes header beat Wake with Pamment on hand to force it over the line.
The game looked over, but Shields came out fighting. For 20 minutes they stretched Emley at the back and Clelland did well to force a corner when Carr was dangerously close. But then Carr robbed Pamment and his cross was met by Scott who fired past Dennis into the bottom corner.
Storey was then sent-off, but Shields still did not give up and continued to have the better of the exchanges. Simpson headed just wide and at the other end Pamment missed a great chance following good work from Greaves and Brookes. The same three along with Cook then produced a lovely 45 yard move before Greaves fired wide. North Shields eventually ran out of steam and by the end Emley were comfortable winners.
